How I Work
Counselling that works with you, not against you.
I'm a person-centred counsellor. I won't tell you how to live your life or hand you a list of instructions for fixing yourself. We'll explore what matters to you, together.
Neurodivergent-affirming counselling
You don't need to mask. You can keep your camera off, look away, fidget, stim, move around, take processing time, ask me to rephrase something or have a pet nearby. Tangents are welcome.
You don't need a formal diagnosis to explore autism, ADHD, burnout or feeling different.
Trauma, identity and belonging
We can explore the effects of childhood experiences, adoption and care experience, difficult relationships, loss, or growing up in a high-control religious environment. There is no single correct way to feel about any of it.
I won't pressure you to revisit painful experiences before you're ready. You decide the pace.
What happens in a session?
We talk about whatever feels important. I listen, reflect, ask questions and sometimes gently challenge. You can disagree with me or tell me if something isn't working. I'd much rather know than have you sit there politely enduring it.
Defamiliarising the familiar
“Defamiliarise the familiar.”
— Zygmunt Bauman, Thinking Sociologically (1990), introduction, pp. 11–15. About the book and later editions.
Sometimes the most useful questions are about the things we've stopped questioning. Who decided what counts as normal? Where did the rules come from? And do they actually fit the person you are?
Whether you're untangling a late diagnosis, adoption, family expectations or beliefs you grew up with, we can look again at what once seemed unquestionable. Not everything familiar deserves to remain unquestioned.
Online or telephone
I offer 50-minute sessions to adults across the UK. We can discuss sensory and communication preferences before beginning.
You don't have to arrive knowing how to explain yourself. We can work that out together.
